Book Overview

When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared from death for a grimmer fate: to perform “scientific research” on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the infamous “Angel of Death”: Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele’s personal research pathologist. Miraculously, he survived to give this terrifying and sobering account.

I couldn’t put it down. I am 77 and remember some people they called DPs for displaced persons. They were all friendly tome that I knew in Saginaw Michigan. God bless them all and I thank God for the United States of America.

Horrific account of atrocities beyond imagining, done in a scale beyond belief.

I was recently in Germany, Czech Republic, and Poland. My purpose was to visit the Holocaust Camps and try to understand the history of my grandparents. I love books and Auschwitaz had a bookstore——as I was browsing through the books an elderly gentlemen asked me why I wanted to read the books and I replied I wanted to try and understand why this happened——his response was that the people did not believe it was really happening until it did happened. This is one of the five books that he recommended that I read—not only did the Nazi’s place Jew, Polish Gypsies, Russians, captured military, people they thought were spies, or just people they did not like into these death camps——they also forced them to harm and degrade their on people in order to survive themselves. If we don’t read true life stories and remember—then it is true—history will repeat itself.

A startlingly blunt description of the Auschwitz experience.

I was prepared to be educated and horrified by the contents of this book. Yet, despite the author's words, I felt shortchanged. I feel that the only way to keep from repeating the past is to face it fully, accepting the reality with open eyes. This author had a unique opportunity to paint a grim reality with perfect colors. But he missed saying so much.
