Book Overview

The #1 New York Times Best Seller

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” —Leonard Cohen

Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it’s a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn’t spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away from the city. Mystified by Myrna's reluctance to reveal her friend's name, Gamache soon discovers the missing woman was once one of the most famous people not just in North America, but in the world, and now goes unrecognized by virtually everyone except the mad, brilliant poet Ruth Zardo.

As events come to a head, Gamache is drawn ever deeper into the world of Three Pines. Increasingly, he is not only investigating the disappearance of Myrna’s friend but also seeking a safe place for himself and his still-loyal colleagues. Is there peace to be found even in Three Pines, and at what cost to Gamache and the people he holds dear?

How the Light Gets In is the ninth Chief Inspector Gamache Novel from Louise Penny.

It was really good book but the bad language on that book. "How the Light Gets In" take place in Paris they speak an English accent just the movie "Mr. Bean's Holiday" (2007) and "Rush Hour 3" (2007), it's most likely in that book and the book takes place in Paris.

I did not tie the 1st chapters together and laid it aside. Tried it again and it is excellent. I will look for her other books.

My husband and I loved the first few books in this series: Wonderful characters, cozy village, mystery to solve. The most recent books have slowly become dark and sad, and not fun any more. I skipped through the last half of this book. Such a skilled author, but she got off the track, at least my track.

Absolutely wonderful book. I have loved everyone in this series. The setting, the characters, and the plots have been addictive. I want very much for there to be another book, and then another...at least until I find Three Pines.
  • Another Masterpiece! Money well-spent!

Ms Penny uses words to paint a delightful work of art. If this is your first Gamache novel ...do yourself the favor of going to the beginning of the series before reading this book. It will make more sense to you and it will assure that there are no spoilers to ruin the mysteries in the previous Gamache novels! Louise Penny is well worth spending your hard earned money on and you will fall in love with the characters. This is an extra ordinary novelist and I hope there is another book coming soon!

This is the latest in the series and brings together many of the plot points from previous novels. The action was intense and suspenseful. Gamache is an endearing, and well written character, although all the characters are interesting. I loved this book. I can't wait for the next one, I miss Gamache already!
