If you like this, read the book The Madmans Daughter, an enchanting novel loosely based on this.

This is one of the finest books I have ever read. A brilliant commentary on humanity (or the lack there of) wrapped in a sci fi horror story. It exposes our natures and faults through a myriad of characters. Slightly reminds me of The Portrait of Dorian Grey. There are two movies of this story, that I know of, the more recent with Val Kilmer. The movies are great for sci fi fans also.

There isn't much to be said about the book proper that hasn't already been stated better elsewhere, but for those interested in the story the 1931 pre-code film adaptation titled 'Island of Lost Souls' (which was recently rereleased by The Criterion Collection) is a great place to look. ARE WE NOT MEN?

This book could certainly have been filled with much more action and peril. But it didn't really need to be. The setting and all around idea for this book really is the star in this case. It is a pretty quick read and the twisted setting and characters certainly make it worth the time. I wished the ending was a little more perilous but the way that the main characters near psychosis plays with him back in the real world was a very interesting way to end. I enjoyed it and it is certainly worth the quick read.
