Book Overview

What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.

Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.
What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

I couldn’t finish this rambling inane self centered book. I have no idea who this is written for. The editor should find another occupation. The lobster thing about serotonin and dominance is childish and frankly plain wrong(maybe he is hyping SSRIs since they do represent $17 billion a year is sales) All the Bible babble wanders around strange logic or rather illogic and the author’s preoccupation with women whom he seems to fear...probably bad experiences. Save your money and go to an Art museum and appreciate human creativity. Phew

The best book I’ve read in 2 years, maybe 10 years. This book will become a standard over time. So well written and backed by science and philosophy.

I’ve watched his lectures so a lot was a fresh reminder on some main points but there is still amazing knowledge to take away from his persepective!

The only knock I have on this book is that the title is a gross oversimplification that leads certain skeptics to the delusional conclusion that this is some sort of self-help book. These rules are laid out with evidence from evolutionary biology, psychological research, and a deep grasp of history and literature. Each rule connects to a primordial part of our nature that humanity rejects in an attempt to create its own value structure. Dr. Peterson makes the Jungian case that humans can't create their own values, instead we must look inside ourselves for an understanding of Being. He relies on the great myths of Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, as an explanation for truths that are not subjective to human experience because they are bound to a deeper level of our psyche. Objective truths bind a society on a deeper level than subjective opinion. Dr. Peterson gives simple rules that can objectively apply to people in all circumstances. That is a breath of fresh air.
