The Effects of Job Loss on the Family (Focus on Family Matters)

Gr. 6-12. Informative, but sometimes unevenly written, these two titles in the Focus on Family Matters series discuss important, disturbing issues. Each chapter begins with a brief scenario of a teen facing the problem, and boxed questions personalize the issues with a "What would you do?" approach. The clear, simple page layout includes color photographs that show teens and adults confronting family trauma and sorrow. Teens will appreciate the immediacy of the passages that speak directly to them, but the authors often talk as if they are discussing teens with another adult, and the fluctuating point of view makes for rough reading. Nevertheless, these well-designed books contain helpful and useful information. Roger Leslie

sounding title notwithstanding, the book is an easy-to-read, lively, thoroughly useful primer for young adults about job loss. As a parent who has experienced being laid off, I highly recommend this book for kids. ...Its main theme is that a parent's unemployment affects the children too, and it addresses the kids' concerns in a caring, positive, and reassuring manner.
