Tales from the Heart of the Balkans
|
From School Library Journal
Grades 3-5--This diverse collection of folk and fairy tales begins with an outline of the region's history and some information on its oral literature in general and on the tales themselves. While generally helpful, the text occasionally references an area that is not on the map. The selections are divided into myths and legends, animal tales, fairy tales, and tales of everyday life. Different regions are represented within each section. The smoothly written retellings are perfect for group read-alouds, storytelling, or independent reading. Most are brief enough for any attention span. Thorough notes, a useful index, and a very helpful glossary and pronunciation guide enhance the collection. The print is easy to read, and the layout is mostly appealing, although the section of black-and-white photographs is a bit dull and the color photographs, while clear, are dated. (The text includes a note to this effect, however.) The laminated orange cover is not particularly attractive, and the textbook appearance may be a turnoff, but readers persuaded to open the book to the stories will be well rewarded.
