Marigold was tickled pink, well gold, when a package arrived from her family. It couldn't be something delish like frosted hazelnut cookies because it had holes punched in it. It was a bit mysterious, but when she opened it up there was "a firefly with glossy black wings and a red head looked up at her from the box." A pet present was more than she could possibly wish for (even better than food) and Marigold promptly named him "Flash." Class would soon start at Mistress Lily's Fairy School and she had to dash off without getting a chance to tell anyone, including her best friend, Rose. Mistress Lily quickly announced, "Today we will begin learning to transform objects. As fairy helpers, you will find this a very useful skill." A pet and a project all in one day ... how cool was that!?!

Later, after class, Marigold got the chance to show Flash to all the other flower fairies. He was a real cuddle bug and soon everyone fell in love with him. For a while Marigold would keep him in a box until he got used to being around Cloverleaf Cottage. Flash was such a lovable pet, "She couldn't believe how quickly she'd grown to love [him]. And she knew he felt the same way about her." Rose even made a special box for Flash, but when Marigold went to get him to snuggle him into his new bed she discovered he was missing! Nothing could console her and she quickly burst into tears. Not even eight of Bink's "acorn pancakes" would help. Flash's disappearance was even more mysterious than the box he came in. Would she ever find out where he had disappeared to?

The mysterious disappearance of Flash, Marigold's pet firefly, will keep the young reader on the edge of her seat.
