Amazon.com Review

Fifteen-year-old Danielle Warner was just kidding when she said she wanted to be an only child. And she was only pretending to hypnotize her little brother Peter. But when he starts acting very peculiar, Danielle realizes she's entered... the Nightmare Room! The Nightmare Room is the place "where true horror waits." It could be anywhere--under a tree, in your basement, at school, in your mind. Soon, Danielle is in a desperate race to save her brother's life, his memory, and his soul.

R.L. Stine, master of the macabre, needs no introduction. His Goosebumps and Fear Street series have been sending chills down readers' spines for years, and the Nightmare Room books are sure to keep those chills coming. Haunted cellars in creaky old houses, a teenage heroine who wonders if she's going crazy, slime-covered zombies whispering and beckoning lost souls through a trapdoor to be forgotten forever... any red-blooded kid is going to devour this book. Stine's writing is brisk and thrilling, if formulaic, with introductions that seem inspired by TV's Twilight Zone. The formula works, though, as countless fans will attest, making bookworms out of nonreaders. Wondering what you'll find in the Nightmare Room next time? Watch for book 2, . (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly

The author of the Goosebumps and Fear Street series is up to his kid-pleasing, tried-and-true tricks in the first installment of The Nightmare Room series. Fittingly creepy cover art will catch youngsters' eyes and the plucky plot should hold their attention. Fifteen-year-old Danielle and her family have just moved into a rambling, 100-year-old "fixer-upper" house. When her parents take off on a business trip, they leave the teen in charge of her nine-year-old brother, Peter. Danielle practices her school talent-show act and pretends to hypnotize him. She finds it a bit scary when he doesn't wake up immediatelyAand scarier yet when he finally does come to and seems to have lost his memory. Shortly after the author sends the parents off on their trip, Stine adds a man dressed in black, skulking outside the house, and the sounds of moaning and whispers emanating from the basement (where Danielle finds slime-covered, zombie-like children) to set a spooky stage for the eerie events that follow. Effectively laced with foreshadowing, appealing Danielle's first-person narrative keeps the tale moving at a quick clip. This may not bring on nightmares, but it's likely to make readers think twice about venturing into dark basements and may well bring them back for the next installment, Locker 13, also releasing this month. Ages 10-up. (Sept.) FYI: A Web site, www.thenightmareroom.com, offers related games and information about the 10 planned forthcoming titles; a story published exclusively on-line, Dead of Night, is also available on the site (Children's Books, Aug. 7)

I've always been a huge fan of R.L. Stine's works - he's one of the best authors for kids' books and one of my role models, as I hope to someday become an author. My favorite R.L. Stine series are the original GOOSEBUMPS series and the original FEAR STREET series. But I also think GOOSEBUMPS 2000 and GHOSTS OF FEAR STREET are pretty good, too. I've read this first book in his new series THE NIGHTMARE ROOM, and I can already tell that this new series will be as original, exciting, chilling, and solidly written as the original GOOSEBUMPS series was.

In this first book, DON'T FORGET ME, Danielle thinks her brother, Peter, is so annoying. She wishes she was an only child. Then she and her family move into this creepy old house and strange things start happening to Peter. He's starting to forget things and he keeps hearing strange voices in the house calling to him. It's another one of R.L. Stine's famous haunted house adventures, but just as good and original as all the others with lots of twists and surprises.

And if you like this new book series, then also check out the brand-new TV show based on the books (R.L. Stine is even one of the exclusive producers!) also called "The Nightmare Room", which airs every Saturday morning on the Kids' WB - it's great, too! Today's episode even starred Justin Bertfield from TV's "Malcolm In The Middle" and it was so cool! The TV show is a must see and the book series is a must read! Great for all ages. :-)

This book is really different. When I read it, I could tell it was a lot more mature than Goosebumps and had a great new idea that kinda delves back into the old haunted house ideas. I really enjoyed reading it. Some parts were weird - including the insanely crazy description of the clothes Addy liked to wear. What is R.L.Stine thinking? Anyway I highly recommend this one.

Fifteen-year-old Danielle, her parents, and her pesky nine-year-old brother Peter have just moved in to a creepy old house. Peter is so annoying that sometimes Danielle wishes she didn't have a brother. For example, when Danielle and her friend Addie are practicing pretended to be hypnotized for a school talent show, Peter insists on getting hypnotized, too. And after that, things start to get really weird. Peter is acting strange. He's forgetting things. Little things at first. But then big things. And strange voices are calling to him from the dark basement of the house. A mysterious guy in a long black coat is following Danielle around. What is causing Peter's amnesia? The mysterious guy? The hypnosis? Danielle's wish? The house itself? Read the book to find out! It's R. L. Stine's first new book in quite a while, and starts off a terrifying new series called The Nightmare Room.
